About

My name is Despina and I'm a good cooker.  You can be a good cooker too.  Flip on over to the 'Cooking Classes' tab to see which of the available classes might be for you.  Let's do some good cook cooking together.  It's easy.  Just relax and I'll show you how.

PROFESSIONALLY:

I am a food lover, experienced instructor and cooking coach. Some spread the mayonnaise...I spread the love. Food is love.

I enjoy sharing recipes, techniques and tips with others. As a cooking coach, I help people with the sticky places in their cooking adventures so they can grow and become more comfortable with trying recipes beyond their current comfort zone.

I owned and operated Despina's International Cafe & Salon Gallery, and I own Good Cook Cooking, a one-time catering business, which is now a teaching and coaching service for people who enjoy cooking or who would like to learn. Don't be afraid, call me about a cooking class--t's easy to learn, really.

I also write. I usually write about food, like this story about small batch maple syrup production for Comestible Journal.

A CLOSER LOOK:  I love to be with people.  One my favourite ways to do that is to gather them in my kitchen and feed them.

Food and cooking have always meant happy times for me; whether it was my grandmother showing me how to shape kourabiethes into the classic crescent moon or my mother teaching me how to make mayonnaise from scratch.  Food has been a reason to gather and celebrate and it's been a reason to spend time with someone, chopping, peeling, stirring with a lot of catch-up conversation over a nice glass of wine or refreshing iced tea.

Sean. Making Spanakopeta at home.
In my 24-plus years of marriage to Dewey, I've learned to travel and enjoy the local food as much as the local people and museums.  My favourite example is our annual trip to the Salt Lake/Park City area every August.  We go hiking, enjoy great views, quiet time to read, new friends we've made there, the Taste of the Wasatch event at Solitude Ski Resort and the largest continously run outdoor art show right on Park City's Main Street.  One of our treats is to visit Shabu, a really cool and hip Asian-style restaurant in Park City, which is owned and operated by two brothers.  We enjoy fantastic sushi and new cocktails, always managing to strike a conversation with other diners.

I have owned a catering company, I have taught cooking classes and I have owned a small restaurant as the chef-owner.  The restaurant was tough.  My hat's off to people who do this every day!  Now I enjoy writing about food, researching and cooking to develop recipes for future cookbooks, feeding friends & family and I teach a few cooking classes.  My favourite, hands down, is to gather a bunch of friends and feed them.  Lots of laughter, a little wine and eating just a bit too much as we wind down the evening with some amazing music.
