My Perfect Thanksgiving

Is it possible? Is there such a thing? A perfect Thanksgiving? I'm not sure that it is possible, but this is who would be at this assembly of love and some of the dishes that I would prepare or request.

The people around the table would be a mix of family--stepchildren and their families, my sister, Antonia, and her family with their families, my cousin Soula and her family, Hope and Chris--and found family/friends tooooooo many to name. I am fortunate to have so many to love and who love me too, and I truly grateful.

And the food? It would definitely be a mashup of Greek and Southern (American) dishes. There would be turkey. Dewey always cooks that, but Antonia would have to carve it. She has mastered the carving! There would be Greek pastitsio, which you might call the meaty version of macaroni and cheese. There would also be Dewey's decadent mashed potatoes and giblet gravy because it's his favorite, and there would be a simpler gravy, because not everyone likes giblet gravy! Emme would prepare the devilled eggs, I would probably make our popular coleslaw and collards, and then my deep understanding of and love for Dewey would manifest in the peas and pearl onions in cream sauce and my made-from-scratch pumpkin pie. I might also make my Greek sweet treat favorites, Galaktobouriko and Karithopita, but I'll save those recipes for another day. Today I'm sharing the peas and pearl onions recipe, which is just as good with a rib roast dinner at Christmas as it is at Thanksgiving.

Peas and pearl onions in cream sauce is one of the easiest things I cook. It can be made ahead, reheated and rehydrated with a splash of cream or milk or even water. This is my easy version, which is great for a last-minute addition to any traditional Thanksgiving table. Here's my recipe in printable format. The onions and peas used are frozen! You don't even have to thaw anything. Really easy when you don't have to shell peas or peel a bowl of tiny onions!

Dewey's favorite, Pumpkin Pie with Meringue. Recipe soon.
